After nearly a decade of world-class engineering, collaboration, and innovation, Melbourne’s transformative Metro Tunnel Project is open, marking a major milestone in Victoria’s transport network. is ready to redefine how our city moves.

Project Summary

This $13.48 billion landmark infrastructure investment delivers five new underground stations, Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall, and Anzac, from February 1st the full network switch will enable more than 1,000 new weekly train services across the network easing congestion and connecting communities like never before. The project will ease congestion, increase capacity, and improve connectivity across metropolitan Melbourne for decades to come.

Synertec was proud to contribute to this transformative program through the design, development, and integration of the Control and Monitoring System (CMS) for Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM). The CMS provides real-time control and monitoring of critical infrastructure throughout the tunnel and station network, supporting safe, efficient, and reliable operations as the system transitions into daily service.

The Challenge

The Metro Tunnel introduces the latest in advanced transport technology, bringing together multiple connected systems that operators must control and monitor in real time, including:

  • Building Management Systems
  • Tunnel Ventilation Systems
  • Fire Detection Systems
  • Platform Screen Doors
  • Security Access Control
  • Rail Signal Gateways
  • Tunnel Intrusion Detection
  • Emergency Warning Systems

With such a high level of interconnectivity, it was essential to deliver a user-focused solution that empowers operators to make informed, rapid decisions while minimising cognitive overload during critical situations.

Synertec's Solution

Synertec engineered a fully distributed control and monitoring solution, providing complete connectivity and visibility across all tunnel and station systems.

Through extensive UX design and stakeholder engagement, a user-focused interface was developed to simplify complex data and streamline operator interaction. The system enhances situational awareness and enables coordinated responses to events across the network.

The CMS also underpins Australia’s first brownfield high-capacity signalling deployment using Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), a key enabler for future digital rail systems and increased service frequency across the metropolitan network.

With the Metro Tunnel now complete and preparing for passenger service, the project stands as a landmark achievement in Australian engineering and infrastructure delivery.

Our team celebrate not only this engineering triumph, but the innovation, teamwork, and resilience that brought this project to its successful project delivery.

Congratulations to everyone involved in delivering one of Victoria’s most significant transport infrastructure projects.

The Synertec team wish to acknowledges the collaboration and dedication of all partners involved and looks forward to seeing the long-term benefits this advanced control and monitoring capability will deliver for Melbourne’s transport future.
