Project Summary

Synertec was engaged by AGL to design and implement a foundational Ignition SCADA system for the Liddell Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The objective of the project was to establish a reliable, fit‑for‑purpose SCADA platform as part of a broader expansion of upgrading the SCADA system across renewable assets.

scope of Works

Synertec’s scope encompassed design and development of the Ignition SCADA platform and architecture.. This included the configuration of front‑end and back‑end gateway networking, as well as the establishment of an Ignition Edge and MQTT licensing architecture appropriate to the project’s early‑stage requirements.

Functional delivery focused on providing meaningful operational insight through well‑structured visualisations and data handling. This included single line diagram displays for the MV switchboard and ring main unit, battery control and monitoring screens, and a comprehensive alarm framework with consistent styling and validated history. Trending and historian functionality was configured to support data validation and analysis, alongside user access controls, security testing, and integration with the site RTAC.

Synertec’s scope included delivery across the entire project lifecyle including design, development, testing, installation, commissioning and ongoing support.

The Challenge

AGL required a rapid SCADA implementation to meet critical early project deadlines, while continuing to support operation and maintenance of the site. The solution needed to support effective data ingestion, clear operational visibility, and dependable alarm and reporting functionality, without introducing unnecessary complexity. Balancing speed of delivery with long‑term flexibility was essential, particularly in the context of a large‑scale BESS operating within a complex power environment.

Synertec's Solution

Synertec worked closely with AGL’s lead engineering team to implement the Ignition SCADA application, delivering a rapidly deployable solution aligned to tight program timeframes. The engagement focused on configuring a robust core SCADA environment that enabled reliable data flow, intuitive visualisation, and system validation through Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).

The solution leveraged Ignition’s modular architecture to establish a clean gateway configuration, structured tag providers, and secure communications using OPC‑UA and DNP3 protocols. Front‑end visualisation and back‑end gateway components were developed in parallel to ensure consistency across the system and clear operational visibility through alarms, trends, and reporting. This collaborative delivery model ensured alignment with AGL’s internal engineering standards and supported early milestone delivery.

The project was delivered by Synertec’s automation engineering team, bringing extensive experience in Ignition SCADA delivery, power systems, and BESS applications. This combination of platform expertise and domain knowledge enabled a pragmatic; technically sound outcome tailored to AGL’s requirements.
